For DBT therapists and group leaders
DBT Pal is a diary card and skills app. Clients rate their urges and emotions each day, tick the skills they used, and can export the week as a PDF to bring to session. It supports skills practice between sessions. It is not therapy, and it is not a crisis service.
The app exports a one-page DBT diary card for any seven-day week. It shows each day's urge and emotion ratings on a 0–5 scale, which skills were used each day, the client's answers to “Did you fill this out honestly?” and “What was your urge to quit?”, and how many days they logged.
Example diary card for one week. Each urge and emotion has a 0 to 5 rating for each day, each skill shows which days it was used, and the header shows whether the card was filled out honestly, the urge to quit, and how many days were logged.
Not every client wants an app. These are free to print and share, with no sign-up.
Guides for clients who keep a paper diary card:
For crisis planning, the DBT Crisis Kit has a checklist and grounding flow a client can fill in ahead of time.
The full details are in the privacy policy.
If a client rates Suicidal Ideation 3 or higher (out of 5) on a day, the app shows a support card with options to call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US). The app doesn't contact anyone and doesn't replace a safety plan agreed with you.
Clients can search for “DBT Pal” on the App Store or Google Play, or you can send them this page. Questions or feedback from clinicians are welcome at support@dbtpal.app.
